Ocean Cliffs
Nerikomi vessel - stoneware, pigments, internally glazed
Ceramic Artist: Gillian Hodes
Statement:
I regularly walk the rugged Sydney coastline, between the ocean, cliffs and wild native vegetation. Striations of metal-rich volcanic lava run through the sandstone, while wind, sun and water erode intricate patterns.
In order to express this in clay, I use a Japanese technique called nerikomi, where layers of colour run through clay as opposed to on its surface. As I join and manipulate clay pieces, the emergent patterns echo the movement of lava and molten sandstone.
